What is Area 51 and what's actually known about it?

Area 51 is a classified U.S. Air Force test facility at Groom Lake, Nevada — officially acknowledged in 2013 — that hosted U-2, A-12, F-117, and other aircraft programs. No U.S. government source has ever confirmed UFO-related activity at Area 51.

Area 51 (also Groom Lake / Homey Airport / Detachment 3, AFFTC) is a classified test facility operated by the U.S. Air Force in southern Nevada. It was established in 1955 to test the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and subsequently hosted the A-12 OXCART, F-117 Nighthawk, B-2 Spirit, and RQ-170 Sentinel programs. The U.S. government did not officially acknowledge Area 51's existence until July 2013, when a CIA Freedom of Information Act release confirmed the facility's role in the U-2 program. AARO's 2024 Historical Record Report directly addressed the popular narrative connecting Area 51 to extraterrestrial craft retrieval and reverse-engineering, and stated that AARO found "no empirical evidence" for any such activity. The Pentagon's PURSUE Release 01 contains no incidents geolocated to Area 51.
