What was the Rendlesham Forest incident?
“Over 26-28 December 1980, multiple U.S. Air Force personnel at RAF Bentwaters / Woodbridge in Suffolk, England reported a triangular craft on the ground and pulsing lights in the adjacent Rendlesham Forest. Deputy Base Commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt recorded the second night's events on micro-cassette.”
The Rendlesham Forest incident occurred over three nights, 26-28 December 1980, at the joint U.S. Air Force / Royal Air Force bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge in Suffolk, England. Multiple USAF security personnel reported observing a small, triangular, metallic craft sitting in a clearing in Rendlesham Forest on the first night, with one airman, Sergeant Jim Penniston, reportedly touching the craft. On the third night, Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt led a patrol into the forest and recorded the events on a micro-cassette dictation device — the recording, now public, captures Halt and his team observing pulsing red lights and an object that appeared to drop molten objects. The British Ministry of Defence eventually released its file (DEFE 24/1948) under FOI in the 2000s; the official UK position is that the incident posed "no defence significance." Not in PURSUE Release 01 (which is U.S. records only).
